Where the Lord Assumed the Form of a Bull
According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's redemption after the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva eluded them in the form of a bull, diving into the earth at Kedarnath, leaving his divine hump upon this sacred ground.
Constructed from massive grey granite blocks standing resilient against centuries of avalanches and flash floods, the sanctum sanctorum houses the triangular rock Shiva Linga. Nearby rests the newly consecrated Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya and the ancient shrine of Bhairavnath Ji on the overlooking cliff.
Situated at 3,584 meters (11,759 feet), temperatures can drop below freezing even in May and June. Layered thermal clothing, waterproof ponchos, and sturdy trekking shoes are mandatory.
